What to Know Before Renting a Trailer: Questions to Ask and Tips to Save Time
Whether you’re hauling livestock, moving equipment, or planning a weekend rodeo trip, renting the right trailer can make or break your experience. But if you’ve never rented one before, where do you start?
Here’s what experienced renters look for—and what you should keep in mind before booking:
1. Know What You’re Hauling
Is it livestock, hay, furniture, or ATVs? The type of load determines the trailer type you need—flatbed, dump, cargo, or specialized livestock trailers.
2. Understand the Hitch Type
Trailers typically come in two options: gooseneck and bumper pull. Not all vehicles are equipped for both, so check compatibility before booking.
3. Ask About Features
Will you need ramps, tie-down points, or a generator? For livestock trailers, amenities like living quarters, stalls, and ventilation make a big difference.
4. Check the Tow Rating
Know your vehicle’s towing capacity—both for safety and compliance. Your rental host may be able to guide you, but the responsibility ultimately falls on you.
5. Inspect Before You Roll
Before driving off, do a full inspection with the trailer owner. Look for signs of wear, make sure lights are working, and double-check that the brakes and tires are road-ready.
6. Insurance Coverage
Does the platform or your personal auto insurance cover trailer rentals? Make sure you’re protected. Some platforms (like ours) offer insurance options at checkout.
Renting a trailer doesn’t have to be complicated—but a little preparation goes a long way. Whether you’re moving hay or hauling horses, asking the right questions makes for a smoother haul.
